“De Stadsfeestzaal” (City Hall) is an impressive neoclassical building from 1908, built according to the plans of the city architect Alexis van Mechelen. It is located at the Meir, the main shopping street in the city of Antwerp. For a long time, it was one of the best-known halls in Antwerp that included shelter to art exhibitions, the Antwerp antique fair, the book fair, the motor show and various venues. In 1983 the building was classified as a protected monument. After a violent fire on the 27th of December 2000, almost everything was destroyed. On October 25, 2007 the completely renovated city hall opened its doors again for the general public, this time as a luxurious shopping center. The glass dome with gold leaf, the stairwell, the original decorations, sculptures, mosaics, wall reliefs and oak parquet floor are faithfully rebuilt according the original designs. The marble in the big room comes from the same quarry as the originally placed marble of the room.
